Analysis: Why the BJP lost its own stronghold?

12 Dec 2018
Anti-incumbency wave and farmers' ‘heartburn’ may be the main cause of BJP’s defeat

DEC 12 (WTN) - Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh were very important for the BJP before the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year. On the basis of the results of these three states, the BJP itself could have assessed that the party is able to reckon the expectations of the people or not. These three states had fiercely supported BJP and especially Narendra Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had won 27 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, while lotus was blossomed in all the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan. At the same time, BJP had won a grand victory in 10 out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh. That is, BJP won 62 out of the total 65 seats in these three states and due to which BJP could get a full majority and Narendra Modi could become Prime Minister.

But what has happened in the last 4 years, the people of these three states rejected the BJP in the Assembly elections before the Lok Sabha elections. The defeat of BJP in all three Hindi-speaking states, there is a threat to the 2019 elections. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP had won the bumper seats from these three states, but what was the reason that the BJP had to face defeat badly in these three states. Let's know these reasons.

Farmers' displeasure
It is being said that anger of the farmers is one of the main reason of the defeat of the BJP in these three Hindi speaking states. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have more rural population and about 70 to 80 per cent of rural population is directly or indirectly dependent on farming related works. Last year, in Mandsaur of Madhya Pradesh, the death of the farmers, due to the bullet, during the protest removed the BJP from the power. Not getting the right price of crops in Mandi and no cash payments were the main of farmers being upset, and due to that BJP had to loss in the Assembly election.

Contradistinction against demonetization and GST
The BJP has always been said the party of traders, and it has been seen that the traders have always supported the BJP. But because of the demonetization and GST, the trader community got angry with the BJP. Due to the demonetization, the farmers had to face problems even with the trader. During the campaigning of the Congress in the Assembly election, Congress stormed the issue of demonetization and GST and reminded the public that the BJP was responsible for the problems that they had to face. It can be said that due to the demonetization, angry businessmen defeated the BJP in collaboration with the farmers.

Unemployment
During the campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Narendra Modi had promised to provide 20 million jobs every year, but this promise of employment was just a promise. In states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, there was hope for the employment in the youth from the state government and the Modi government. But when employment expectations could not be fulfilled, the anger of the youth turned out to be on the BJP government and it had to face defeat.

Anti-incumbency wave
As you know, the BJP had been in the power for the last 15 years in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In such a situation, it was natural that the people wanted change after 15 years. In this way people who were angry with the government's work voted against the BJP government. As the alternative was Congress itself, so the public chose the Congress. At the same time in Rajasthan, BJP government was there from the last five years, and even there, the public was angry with the functioning of Vasandhara Raje Scindia. As a result, the BJP had to face defeat in all three states.

Amendment in the SC-ST Act
The BJP has had to bear the brunt of the amendment in the SC-ST Act. The upper caste and backward class has been the BJP's traditional vote bank, and it has been seen that this class always had voted for the BJP and due to their voting, BJP could form government in the states and the center. But by amending in the SC-ST Act, the BJP had resented this class and due to which this class voted against the BJP and the BJP had to face badly in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
