Kolkata: West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Monday condoled the loss of lives of pilgrims in West Bengal’s Sagar Island during their return from the Gangasagar Mela.

“Hon’ble Governor expressed his heartfelt condolences over the loss of lives of pilgrims in the Sagar Islands in South 24 Parganas,” said a message from the Governor’s office.

The Governor also wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

According to state Sundarbans Development Minister Manturam Pakhira, six pilgrims, all women, died due to suffocation during a mad rush by people to board a vessel at Kachuberia on their way home from Gangasagar fair after taking a holy dip on Sunday.-Agency
