Delhi has lowest maximum May 22 temperature in six year (Lead)

New Delhi May 22 (IANS) Delhi on Monday recorded at 29.4 degree Celsius -- 11 notches below the season s average -- one of the coolest days in May and the lowest maximum temperature for the day in six years.

The minimum was 21.8 degrees a notch below the season s average. The Met office recorded 0.6 mm rain in Safdarjung and 0.4 mm in the ridge area.

The Met office said that on the same day from 2016 to 2011 the maximum temperatures were 42 43 39 45 42 and 32 degrees respectively.

However the Met office expects the temperatures to rise from Tuesday onwards and cross 40 degrees in the next four days.

The sudden respite is due to western disturbances and induced cyclonic circulation over Punjab and Haryana. Persistent clouding and light rain kept the mercury under control Sanjay Palawat Director of private weather forecaster Skymet told IANS.

According to India Meteorological Department the maximum temperature on Tuesday is expected to hover around 37 degrees.

Sunday s maximum was 39.6 degrees the season s average and the minimum 28.4 degrees two notches above the season s average.

There is a possibility of thunderstorm with rain on Tuesday as well the official said.

Rain and thundershower along with strong surface winds may occur in some parts over central and east Delhi New Delhi north Delhi Shahdara Faridabad Gurgaon Jhajjar Palwal Rohtak Sonepat Baghpat Bulandshahr Gautam Buddha Nagar Ghaziabad and Hapur districts of Delhi and the National Capital Region.
