New Delhi: India on Wednesday welcomes Morocco's return to the African Union, saying it will strengthen African unity.

India congratulates Morocco on its return to the African Union with an overwhelming majority," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

"India and Africa have a historic relationship and this has grown into a sustainable partnership," he stated. "India wholeheartedly welcomes Morocco's return to AU, which has strengthened Africa's unity."

Morocco has been re-admitted a member of the African Union, almost 33 years after it left the bloc over Western Sahara that the African country regards as its own territory.
