Traffic thrown out of gear as Kolkata sees heavy downpour

Kolkata July 7 (IANS) Traffic was thrown out of gear and a number of arterial roads were waterlogged as the city on Friday received its first heavy monsoon showers.

"At least two spells of heavy rain are predicted every day for the next 48 hours " a met official told IANS.

There was massive rainfall in various parts of the city from around 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. with the M.G road and Theatre Road receiving nearly 80 to 100 mm.

"We have never claimed that the city streets would not be waterlogged if there is massive rain but we have the infrastructure to pump out the water quickly " said city Mayor Sovan Chatterjee.

"The situation is normal now. All the big pumping stations in the city in places like Tala Ballygunj Mominpur Birpara and Duttapukur worked to their full extent to pump out the water from the city streets " he added.

Many parts of the city like have been inundated and traffic snarls were witnessed on some vital arterial roads.
