Followers of Vogue on Instagram were quick to criticise the photo, accusing it of being 'blackface', rather than tanning.
"How about instead of trying to be a color you're not, hire someone who is naturally that color! I totally understand tanning but this isn't tanning this is blackface!" was reaction of a fan. Similar reactions came from many.
The magazine also issued an apology to its readers."In our latest cover shoot by Steven Klein, the vision was to create a beachwear-themed story with a stylized bronzing effect," said a spokesperson for Vogue .
Gigi Hadid , clarified about the photoshoot on Twitter.
