Kabul June 5 (IANS) Afghan police have foiled a gemstone smuggling bid in Nangarhar province and arrested three persons the Interior Ministry announced on Monday.
The attempt to smuggle 5 210 kg of precious stones on the highway linking Kabul to the border town of Torkham was foiled the ministry said.
Torkham is a border town that connects Afghanistan s Jalalabad city with Pakistan s Peshawar Xinhua news agency reported.
The statement however did not identify the kind of gemstones and their prices.
Precious and semi-precious stones such as emerald ruby and lapis lazuli are routinely smuggled out of Afghanistan.
