Agartala April 30 (IANS) The ruling BJP and RSS-backed lawyers panel on Monday won the Tripura Bar Council (TBC) election securing nine seats in the 15-member Council an official said.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-backed lawyers won four seats while outgoing Council Chairman and Congress nominee Pijush Kanti Biswas and Independent candidate Purosattam Roy Barman were re-elected.
Voting for the bar council election took place on February 28.
Altogether 19 lawyers contested the election and 853 of 1 000 members of the lawyers body voted to form the new executive panel of the TBC which has a three-year term.
Congratulating the newly-elected pro-BJP members Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said: "One more step has been taken towards achieving a communist-mukt Tripura."
The outgoing Council was governed by a panel backed by the Congress and the CPI-M.
