Omkareshwar is a holy place in Maghya Pradesh, India. It can only be termed as a blessing, by Lords and mother nature, that Omkareshwar, the sacred island, is shaped like Om - the holiest symbol of Hinduism. Not surprising then that this serene town is also one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva in India. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the Hindu ॐ symbol.

It  is adorned with beautiful hills, between which the river Narmada forms a pool. Above this pool runs a cantilever type bridge which further enhances the scenic beauty of this island. Morning prayers in temple are like magic spell.



There are two main temples of Lord Shiva here, one to Omkareshwar (whose name means "Lord of Omkaara or the Lord of the Om Sound") located in the island and one to Amareshwar (whose name means "Immortal lord" or "lord of the Immortals or Devas") located on the south bank of Narmada River on the mainland.

The airports closest to Omkareshwar is Indore (77km) . It is 133 km from Ujjain. The nearest major railway station is Indore (77 km). One can also board a bus from Ujjain, Indore or Khandwa to reach Omkareshwar .
