WTN: Diabetes is unrelenting in its spread in India. Our growingly sedentary lifestyle, lack of time and space for exercise and faulty food habits are the major triggers for this surge. It is estimated that people as young as 20 years old are falling prey to Type 2 diabetes.

There are between 70-75 million diabetics in the country and it is likely to touch or cross 100 million by 2030 it is believed. And more alarmingly, close to 68 per cent Indians have uncontrolled diabetes, which enhances fatality chances. Ayurveda practitioners say that diabetes has no medicine as such or sure shot ways to end it. It can be controlled to an extent but can never be cured unless we change our food and lifestyle. The right practices can only bring change.

Taking too much allopathy drugs in itself suitable to sustain diabetes and even trigger it. They say if half a teaspoonful turmeric powder with some amla is consumed daily, there is least chance of getting diabetes. Those gaining weight due to diabetes are advised to take honey with tepid water every morning. Diabetics too desirous of having sweet can once in a while have organic jaggery. Those prone to get diabetes and also those having it must ensure the intake of more fruits and cereals in their food. Citrus/ seasonal fruits and salads are very much advisable apart from germinating grams.

Coconut water also has a good effect on the health of a diabetic. Another major reason for diabetes is stress. Apart from office and workplace stress, diabetes itself leads to stress and morbidity and that further engenders stress. To control diabetes, distressing is a major requirement and yoga/meditation is a tried and tested way to detoxify and distress oneself. Mandukasan, Vakrasan, Dhanurasan, Vajrasan and Bhujangasan are some of the commonly practicable yogas which can help keeping the body fit and less prone to diabetes. One major factor in stabilising diabetes and lessening the chances of its affliction is information and awareness of the things to do or not to do. Not many people know of the ways not to get diabetes and to tame it if and once it sets in.

People wake up late and visit the doctor late which exacerbates the problem. If one is conscious of one’s bodily changes and pick the symptoms early, much of the damage can be nipped in the bud. The support of family members and friends also play a big role in diabetes control and its proper handling. If they are equipped and informed in sensibly and sensitively managing the disease, a diabetic’s life becomes easier and the morbidity lessens. Diabetes in its wake ushers in a plethora of medical conditions which become though to be handled.
