Chennai Jan 29 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Monday laid the foundation stone of the Phase I of a supercritical thermal power plant of two 660 MW each at Udangudi in Tuticorin district around 610 km from here.
The Chief Minister said Phase I of the coal-based project of which he laid the foundation stone through videoconferencing is expected to go on steam in 2020-21.
According to Palaniswami the state is taking steps to implement power projects with a total generation capacity of 9 300 MW at an outlay of Rs 53 890 crore.
Palaniswami said projects involving an outlay of Rs 46 821 crore to achieve power generation capacity of 6 200 MW are underway in the southern state.
Palaniswami said the power infrastructure is also being strengthened in the state.
