Poison dart frogs inhabit the rain forests of Central and South America. Their brilliant colors make them look like children’s playing things . But they represent some of the most naturally toxic animals on earth. Humans have learned to make use of their poison.

The golden poison dart frog, for example, grows only two inches long but contain enough venom to kill ten human beings. The number of people of western Colombia use the frog’s venom for hunting.

 Scientists suspect that poison dart frogs gain their toxicity from alkaloids in the food they eat, including ants and mites. Poison dart frogs raised in captivity and isolated from their native diet do not develop venom.
